Quilt Size Guide

Zero Waste & No Sign-up: Reference chart for standard quilt sizes. Find recommended dimensions for baby, throw, twin, full, queen, and king quilts including drop and pillow tuck allowances.

How to Use the Quilt Size Guide

Select a bed size to see the standard quilt dimensions alongside the mattress it covers. The reference runs from crib quilts at 36 x 52 inches through throw (50 x 65), twin (70 x 90), full (85 x 108), and queen (90 x 108) up to king at 108 x 108 inches.

The gap between quilt and mattress dimensions is the drop. A queen quilt at 90 inches wide covers a 60-inch mattress with 15 inches hanging on each side, while the extra length covers the pillow area. If your mattress is deeper than standard, measure the drop you want and add it twice to the mattress width.

Use the chosen size as the target for the block layout calculator to translate it into rows, columns, and borders. Remember that backing and batting must both be cut larger than the finished top, so the bed size you select drives every other material estimate in the project.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a standard throw quilt size?

A throw quilt is typically 50 x 60 inches or 60 x 80 inches, sized for draping over a sofa or lap use rather than covering a full bed.

How much drop should I add for a bed quilt?

Add 12-15 inches of drop on each side for a decorative bedspread effect. For a simple coverlet that reaches the top of the box spring, 9-10 inches of drop is sufficient.

Should I make my quilt top larger than the mattress?

Yes. Add at least 2 x drop length to the width and 2 x drop length plus pillow tuck (10-12 inches) to the length to ensure the finished quilt covers the mattress properly.
