Quilt Seam Allowance Guide: Cut Size Math That Always Works
Why every finished dimension grows by half an inch — and when it doesn't.
Every pattern instruction that says 'cut 3-1/2 inch squares for 3-inch finished blocks' is applying one rule: a seam allowance is consumed on every edge that gets sewn. Understanding that rule lets you convert any finished measurement into a cutting size without a pattern, resize other people's designs, and diagnose blocks that come out consistently small. The Base Formula: Finished Plus Twice the Seam
A patch loses one seam allowance on each side when it is sewn to its neighbors, so the cutting size equals the finished size plus two seam allowances per dimension. With quilting's standard quarter-inch seam that means adding half an inch to both width and height: a 4 x 6 inch finished rectangle is cut 4-1/2 x 6-1/2. Why Triangles Break the Half-Inch Rule
The plus-half-inch rule only holds when seams run parallel to the cut edges. The moment a seam crosses fabric on the diagonal, more fabric is consumed: a half-square triangle needs its starting square cut at the finished size plus 7/8 inch, and a quarter-square triangle needs finished size plus 1-1/4 inches. If you apply the plain half-inch rule to triangle units, every one will finish too small — the most common sizing mistake in sampler quilts.
Testing Your Real Seam Allowance
Machines and feet vary, so verify what your quarter inch actually measures. Cut three strips exactly 1-1/2 inches wide, sew them together along the long edges, and press. The center strip should measure exactly 1 inch across. If it is narrower, your seam is too deep; if wider, too shallow. Adjust the needle position or use a quarter-inch foot with a guide, and repeat the test until the center strip hits 1 inch.
Resizing Patterns with Confidence
Once you separate finished sizes from cut sizes, scaling a design becomes mechanical: strip the seam allowances off the pattern's cut dimensions to recover the finished geometry, scale the finished numbers, then add the allowances back. Always do the math on finished dimensions — scaling cut sizes directly distorts the design because the fixed half inch does not scale with the patch.

Twice — once for each edge. A quarter-inch seam adds half an inch to the width and half an inch to the height, because both the left and right (and top and bottom) edges are sewn into seams.
Is the quarter-inch seam mandatory in quilting?
It is the convention nearly all published patterns assume, chosen to balance fabric economy with seam strength. You can piece with a wider seam if you cut accordingly, but mixing seam widths within one quilt makes the blocks incompatible.
What cut size do I need for a 5-inch finished square?
