Y-Seam Calculator

Zero Waste & No Sign-up: Calculate strip widths and diamond cutting dimensions for Y-seam (set-in seam) blocks including 60-degree diamonds used in hexagon and star patterns.

How to Use the Y-Seam Calculator

Enter the finished diamond size and how many blocks you are making. The tool sizes 60-degree diamonds for tumbling block and star designs: the strip you cut diamonds from is the finished size plus two seam allowances wide, half an inch wider at the standard quarter-inch seam.

The diamond's length along the strip is longer than its width — the finished size times 2 divided by the square root of 3, about 1.155 times the finished size, plus seam allowances. A 3-inch diamond therefore cuts roughly 3.96 inches point to point, which is why eyeballing diamonds from squares never works.

Tumbling blocks read as three-dimensional because each block uses a dark, a medium, and a light diamond. The calculator splits the piece count evenly across the three values and estimates yardage for each from 44-inch fabric with a 10 percent waste allowance, rounded up to the next eighth of a yard.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a Y-seam in quilting?

A Y-seam, also called a set-in seam, occurs where three pieces of fabric meet at a point forming a Y shape. They cannot be sewn in a continuous line and require stopping at the seam allowance intersection before pivoting.

What patterns use Y-seams?

Y-seams are required for Lone Star, Grandmother's Flower Garden, Baby's Blocks (tumbling blocks), and many hexagon-based designs. Any pattern with 60-degree or 45-degree diamond shapes typically needs Y-seams.

How do I mark the stop point for a Y-seam?

Mark the seam intersection (1/4 inch from each raw edge at the corner) with a pin or fabric marker before sewing. Stop stitching exactly at this mark and backstitch to secure before pivoting to sew the next seam.
