How to Use the Precut Calculator
Select your precut type and enter how many bundles or pieces you have. The calculator shows total piece count, total fabric area, and the approximate equivalent in regular yardage.
Equivalent yardage = total area ÷ (42" × 36"). This helps when substituting precuts for regular yardage in patterns. Remember that precut edges include seam allowances, so the usable finished area per piece is smaller.
Precuts are ideal for scrappy quilts, but check your pattern's requirements carefully. A pattern calling for 1/4 yard cuts per fabric needs 18" × 21" pieces — fat quarters work perfectly; jelly roll strips would need to be pieced.

How much fabric is in a jelly roll?
A jelly roll contains 40 strips, each 2.5" × 42". Total area is approximately 4,200 sq in, equivalent to about 2.8 yards of 42"-wide fabric.
How many charm packs do I need for a quilt?
A charm pack has 42 five-inch squares. Divide the total 5" squares your pattern needs by 42. For a lap quilt with 120 charm squares, you need 3 charm packs (3 × 42 = 126, with a few spares).
What is the difference between a fat quarter and a regular quarter yard?
A regular quarter yard = 9" × 44". A fat quarter = 18" × 21". Same area, but the fat quarter shape is more useful for cutting squares and rectangles.
